The Berkowitz Law Firm LLC Casts Spotlight On Distracted Driving Accident In Hartford County School Zone

Written by Berkowitz

school busIn 2013 alone, 3,154 people were killed in distracted driving crashes. To that end, the U.S. Department of Transportation is spearheading an effort to stop texting and cell phone use behind the wheel. Enforcing this has been a challenge. And, as personal injury experts Berkowitz and Hanna LLC point out, the gravity of a distracted driving accident occurring in a school zone – as in the recent case in Hartford County –  is a grim reality.

Tom Lazuk was driving his Jeep on Prospect Street in Wethersfield, Connecticut on April 2 when a bus driver rear-ended him while en route (with a busload of children) to Glastonbury-East Hartford Elementary Magnet School. Lazuk, the bus driver and seven children were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for injuries. Although no one was seriously hurt, Lazuk suffered “facial lacerations, broken teeth and orthopedic injuries” that require ongoing treatment. The bus driver, allegedly on his cell phone at the time of the accident, was cited for distracted driving and for driving too fast in a school zone. Lazuk is suing the First Student bus company.

The bus driver, whose name has not yet been released, was summarily fired by First Student bus company, notes Berkowitz and Hanna LLC, and litigation is still pending.
