At times, the legal experts at Berkowitz and Hanna LLC will come across news stories on medical malpractice lawsuits involving surgical injuries. They are mistakes that can occur during or after surgery, which can leave a patient with serious and life-altering physical injuries. These injuries may require additional medical treatment or cannot be fixed at all.

The Times Union has reported on such a lawsuit involving a New Paltz, NY woman and her husband who were awarded $1.75 million in damages for life-altering injuries she suffered as a result of a surgery in 2009. The defendants—a physician, a nurse practitioner and the Northeast Urogynecology, Pelvic Medicine, and Reconstructive Surgery in Albany—were found to be negligent in performing the plaintiff’s surgery. They also failed to properly diagnose and treat an abscess that developed after the procedure happened.

The plaintiff saw a different surgeon to get the abscess treated and needed three more surgeries before the end of 2009. The defendants are said to be planning to appeal the jury’s decision. Berkowitz and Hanna LLC will follow this case as its events progress.

Note: Berkowitz and Hanna LLC did not represent any of the parties in this case.
