Connecticut Woman Awarded $12 Million for Botched Colon Surgery

Written by Berkowitz

A woman was awarded $12 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against a Connecticut hospital after a doctor allegedly punctured her colon during a routine hernia operation. According to NBC, Vivian Gagliano, 65, was in a coma for one month and suffered permanent damage including the loss of most her large intestine as a result of the puncture.

Gagliano filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against two doctors and Danbury Hospital over the injuries she sustained during surgery in 2008. After three hours of deliberation, the jury found the defendants guilty of negligence.

According to the lawsuit, doctors failed to realize the injury until after Gagliano was already closed up and suffered from a severe infection. The operation was performed by a surgical resident.

When doctors make mistakes during surgery, the results can be devastating – even mistakes made during routine procedures. The Connecticut medical malpractice lawyers of Berkowitz and Hanna LLC represent individuals and families that suffer due to medical mistakes.
