The Berkowitz Law Firm LLC Talks About High School Football Deaths

Written by Berkowitz

As the NFL examines players and head injuries, questions are also arising about the safety of participating in football in high school. Recently, in one week, three high school football players died. While the three tragic cases all had different facts, each player died following a game or practice. In one instance, Long Island, Tom Cutinella died after crashing into another player. The cause of death has not yet been released.

Berkowitz and Hanna LLC has reported on lawsuits against the NFL and also knows that suits have been brought against the NCAA for the league’s handling of head injuries. Recently, the NCAA settled a class-action head-injury lawsuit by creating a $70 million fund to diagnose thousands of former and current college athletes to determine if they suffered brain trauma playing football, hockey, soccer or other contact sports. More locally, schools across Connecticut are re-evaluating their concussion guidelines, and there may even be state legislation regarding this issue.

As leagues, schools and states discuss how to best handle the safety of athletes in contact sports, Berkowitz and Hanna LLC will stay on top of news related to this issue.

Berkowitz and Hanna LLC did not represent any of the parties in these lawsuits.
