Patient Awarded a Confidential Medical Malpractice Settlement As A Result Of An Undiagnosed Anastomotic Leak Following Surgery

Jennifer Amdur has been awarded a confidential medical malpractice settlement on behalf of a client who sustained severe permanent gastrointestinal injuries following a gastrointestinal surgery she underwent for upper stomach pain. Unfortunately, following said surgical procedure, our client became sicker and sicker. According to Attorney Amdur, “our client’s post-operative complications were due to an undiagnosed anastomotic leak. An anastomotic leak is a grave complication that occurs when a surgical procedure connecting two previously unconnected areas of the intestines fails, and the contents of the intestines begin to leak into the abdominal cavity. Since an anastomotic leak is a medical emergency which can lead to a patient developing a serious infection, sepsis, multi-organ failure, and/or death, it is imperative that the leak is timely diagnosed and treated. Unfortunately, in our client’s case, despite obvious signs and symptoms of a leak, our client’s leak was untimely diagnosed, and as a result, she was forced to undergo multiple procedures and extensive treatment, which has left her with a substantial permanent disfigurement, along with permanent physical and psychological sequelae.”
