The ride-sharing service Uber is battling lawsuits in many areas including a wrongful death lawsuit after an alleged Uber driver struck and killed a six year-old girl in San Francisco.
Berkowitz and Hanna LLC notes that there are currently 13 active lawsuits pending across the country, and that they range from regulatory complaints to insurance-related suits to the wrongful death case. Most recently, the driver in the San Francisco case was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
In the wrongful death lawsuit, the plaintiffs are the family of the child, Sofia Liu, who was killed on New Year’s eve, December 31, 2013 in an automobile accident involving an Uber driver. The car also struck Sofia’s brother and mother. All three went to the hospital after the accident, and Sofia died of her injuries.
Berkowitz and Hanna LLC understands that a monetary award cannot bring back a loved one. It can, however, help with funeral expense and compensate for loss of companionship and mental anguish. In this case, now that the driver has been arrested, it will be interesting to see if a settlement takes place in the civil wrongful death suit.
Berkowitz and Hanna LLC did not represent any of the parties in this case.
