Berkowitz and Hanna LLC knows that sometimes settling a claim before trial is the best outcome for all of the parties involved. That seems to be the case in a recent lawsuit in Columbus, Georgia. In that lawsuit, the parents of Jaquese Harris settled with the city of Columbus for $500,000 in a wrongful death case.
Ms. Harris died outside a nightclub after she was hit by a police car. Her parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, claiming that the police officer was negligent. Although an independent investigation found that the officer was not at fault, settling the lawsuit was the path that the parties chose to take. The mayor of Columbus, Teresa Tomlinson said the city would have paid a similar amount to fight the lawsuit. “There’s been a young woman lost here, and we just wanted everyone to move on with their lives,” she said.
Car accidents are one of many possible situations that can lead to a wrongful death. Berkowitz and Hanna LLC knows that each case presents a specific set of facts, and sometimes liability is unclear. For the family of Ms. Harris, this seems to be a just outcome after a devastating loss.
Berkowitz and Hanna LLC did not represent any of the parties in this case.
